IntroductionThe Department of Zoology was created in early 2006 and is one of the five departments in the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The Department is providing teaching and research in various Zoology disciplines like Physiology, Endocrinology, Developmental biology/embryology, Reproductive Physiology, Parasitology, Human Genetics and Fisheries. All faculty members are PhD holders and have formal postdoc training. Well equipped core labs and specific research labs are available for MPhil and PhD students in the Department. Core lab facilities include transmission and scanning electron microscopes, HPLC, atomic absorption photometer, thermocyclers, tissue culture instrumentation (laminar flows, incubators, microscopes), scintillation and gamma counters. Department has a small Animal Facility and a Fish lab for carrying out experimental studies on laboratory rodents and primates, and fish. A unique feature of the facility is maintenance and experimentation on non-human primates. Rhesus macaques are housed in special hand-squeezed cages and are used in reproductive physiology and neuroendocrinology research. The Animal Facility has a surgical suite for carrying out surgical and specific sampling procedures on various animal models. The Department has regular research ties with institutions like, PARC/NARC, National Institute of Health, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology, and National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. The Department is receiving research project funding from the Pakistan Science Foundation and Higher Education Commission. The Department has started a Teachers Training Program in which Biology Teaches of various institutes of higher education are skilled in practical laboratory techniques. Two such programs have been launched and 45 faculty members/colleagues have received practical training in Laboratory Methods in Genetics. The Department also holds regular invited seminars by noted scientists for the benifit of its research students and faculty. In the current year (2010) three such seminars have been arranged so far. A national symposium on Physiology was recently organized by Department. |
